Some strange team is committed to bringing Linux to the iPhone. They are connected to other teams and hackers and so on. One great leap ahead seems to be a boot loading modification which can be installed on current iPhones. The modification allows you to load any firmware (even unsigned versions). Currently only a Mac tool is available as you can read in the announcement. You can download the Apple Macintosh tool over @ iPhone-Dev.
